Question:
How reliable is a 2002 Audi TT Roadster?
2013-10-08 19:05:20 UTC
I'm considering buying an audi tt roadster convertible 1.8T turbo.
clean title
180 hp
135k miles with no leaks
new rims
5speed manuel
tune up just done (oil, plugs, filter) less than 2 weeks ago. driver seat a little bit scuffed up but not ripped.
with kenwood mp3, bluetooth, ipod ready, pandora, usb connection, hd radio, sirius ready, bluetooth phone installed with mic, and a $300 deck

priced at 7500.

i really like the car but i dont know if 135k is too many miles. i have about 12k to spend on a car but this one really stands out to me. what will need to be done in the first year of ownership? if a lot needs to be done then i'd be willing to spend a couple thousand on it. but i just dont know how many miles an '02 Audi TT will last for so i dont know if it's worth it.

Audis and VWs (same company) of that era had worse than average reliability. I checked Consumer Reports magazine and they don't go back that far (only to 2003), but for the VW and Audi models where they do have data for 2003, it's mostly not good.

I had a 2001 Passat AWD V6, got it new; by the time it hit 100K it was getting very expensive to keep fixing it!

You really need to visit www.quattroworld.com and www.audiworld.com. Honestly, you seem to know so little about cars and about Audi's that I think this car should be a pass for you. While the miles are high, with proper routine maintenance and timely repairs, the car can remain solid but it's not going to do so for free. You can expect to spend anywhere from $1200.00 to $3,000 per year keeping it on the road. Some years will be light, oil changes, maybe tires, other years will be heavy with God knows what. If that car is still on the original turbo, that would be a good bet to let go on your watch and that will be $$$ if and when it does.

My 02 Audi which was a B5 S4 is still on the road past 184,000 miles. I sold it then but as I already mentioned, the older it got, the more was needed to keep it in tip top shape.

Lastly, do not take the sellers word for anything. Your interests are diametrically opposed. Always have your own mechanic or shop do a pre purchase inspection on the car, including a leak down test on the cylinders.

I had a 2002 Audi TT Roadster and in the first 3 years alone I spent well over $15,000 in repairs on it. A blown head gasket was the most costly of the repairs. Do some google searches and you'll find tons of common issues.

Sounds expensive for that model and miles. Ask the following, when the engine timing belt was changed (every 65,000 mi), when the dashpod was replaced (usually between 40-50,000 mi), when ball joints, tie rod ends, and suspension rubber was replaced (usually 75,000 it starts getting sloppy), if shocks and struts were replaced (stocks suck). The 225 hp / 6sp is better. I know the mileage sounds low for how long it lasts but keep in mind people don't drive them like a Honda, Ford or Chevy.

Audi/VW are good looking and powerful cars thats their edge in the competition, reliability and fuel efficiency is bad. They have good designs and concepts and engineering focuses more on making it fast. If you wanna look cool then buy it, but with the mileage it has you should expect lots of repairs. I don't recommend it for daily driving.
