r-tronic shift sytem is essentially tiptronic. it allows for automatic drivers to ride around town no problem. but it also allows you to switch in tronic. in tronic, the driver treats the car like a manual. the + shifts the gear up and the - shifts it down. This is when you want the sporty feel of your car. R-tronic is a sportier version of a tiptronic system. and with a car like an r8. having the ability to throw it into manual when you relly want to jump is a plus.

You can drive it. It has a fully automatic mode. Or you can shift it over to a manual mode where all you have to do it hit the shifter up or down to shift. There is now clutch pedal, the car operates the clutch for you. Or you can use the paddle shifters on the steering wheel. But there's nothing like shifter the manually version in the aluminum H-gate and hearing the "Clang" when shifting. You will not be disappointed with that car, auto or manual.
